The education theorists, practitioners and technologists George Siemens and Stephen Downes united again for the course E-Learning 3.0. Stephen was in a hotel room in Toronto and George somewhere in Australia, but the wonders of YouTube made them unite (after a search for the light switches).

We launched E-Learning 3.0 as scheduled on October 18, though with a very busy week not everything went exactly as planned (you will find that this is the norm for this MOOC, so be prepared for changes in plans and activities throughout the course).

eLearning 3.0 kicked off this week with an interesting overview from Stephen of the issues and topics which will be covered in the mooc. I must confess, I try to avoid using the term “eLearning” due to the negative connotations this can have for learners.
In this first week of the E-Learning 3.0 MOOC, Stephen Downes has shared a video introduction to the course (see https://el30.mooc.ca/course_activity_centre.htm ) and also recorded a video of a conversation he had with George Siemens. This was really enjoyable to watch.
Learning and understanding learning is one of my favourite topics and I love tinkering with how people think and what it means for learning and life. This post is a short reflection on a conversation between Stephen Downes and George Siemens as a part of the open connectivist ‘class’ #el30.
So the starting shot for EL30 happened yesterday night, and now the rich buffet of ideas is officially opened. I wonder why we felt that the availability of the resources did not yet suffice to start individual discussions before this. Or why a synchronous session is apparently needed to start off the asynchronous discussions (I notice this because I have always had problems with the speed of such live sessions).
Please note: these posts were added to the newsletter manually. Apologies if I missed you. I'll catch up next week. Your first assignment in the course (to be posted in a day or two) will be to create and submit your blog or website for harvesting.
